Check out these new SUV models for 2018 that showcase sporty styles fuel-efficiency. These new models vary in every size segment and price point, with offerings coming in from Ford, Jaguar, BMW and even Alfa Romeo.
This entrant to the list achieves its fuel efficiency by using a modest, not-so-thirsty engine that's tuned to output the needed BHP to service the needs of an SUV. Based on the Guilia sedan, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio is the first crossover SUV to come out of Alfa. Powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, the Stelvio is quick and nimble with its 280 horsepower.
Also on offer is the Quadrifoglio model, which features a Ferrari-based engine that clocks in at a 2.9-liter, 505-horsepower twin-turbocharged V6. All versions come with the DNA drive selector, which lets the driver fine-tune their performance characteristics.
The BMW X2 is BMW’s offering for the subcompact range. Slightly more performance-based than the X1, the X2 also features a more coupe-like profile in a bid to challenge the Range Rover Evoque. Offering a choice of manual or automatic gearboxes, the X2 comes with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which doesn't chug fuel to get its power down, thanks to the earnest gains afforded by the German auto manufacturer's cutting-edge turbocharger and engine tuning.
The Ford EcoSport is based on the Fiesta platform, and shares 1.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder and 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engines. Inside, however, the EcoSport offers a touchscreen infotainment system, and a long list of available features. AWD, and a 6-speed automatic gearbox pair with the modest engine to output sufficient power without going overboard with fuel consumption.
Hyundai’s entry into the subcompact crossover SUV arena comes in the form of the Hyundai Kona. With attractive, curvy styling, the Kona offers engine choices of a 2.0-liter, 147-horsepower 4-cylinder, and a 1.6-liter turbo 4-cylinder that boasts 175 horsepower. The Kona does not lack in features either, with available heads-up display, and wireless phone charging, in addition to various accident-avoidance systems. The Kona offers its best savings at the gas pump by being a deceptively lightweight vehicle with a sprite, snappy driving profile.
The smaller sibling of the F-Pace, the Jaguar E-Pace enters the subcompact range nicely styled. Built like a sports car with the body of an SUV, the 2.0-liter, 246-horsepower turbo, 4-engine comes standard, with a 296-horsepower version also offered. Featuring the latest, and best, of Jaguar precision handling, multiple performance options remain available. Jaguar allows their customers to save at the gas station by cutting weight wherever possible, opting to keep the sports styling motifs present, as opposed to utilizing large, boxy SUV design elements.
Land Rover introduces its alternative to the Evoque, offering the 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar. There is a trio of engines: a 247-horsepower, 4-cylinder; a 380-horsepower V6; and a 180-horsepower 4-cylinder diesel. The infotainment system features dual 10-inch touchscreens. The Velar affords its users savings by intelligently utilizing a diesel engine that practically sips on gas.
Splitting the size difference of the Outlander and Outlander Sport, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross offers much more expressive styling than either. Featuring a 1.5-liter turbo 4-engine and a gearless CVT automatic transmission, the Eclipse Cross impresses. It also offers a touchpad controlled infotainment system and a clean, streamlined interior. The gearless transmission and lightweight of this vehicle allow for seamless operation of the modest engine, which keeps fuel consumption levels low.
With more of a focus on the American market than ever before, the 3-row Volkswagen Atlas provides more room than is expected from a crossover. Powered by a choice of 2.0-liter turbo 4-engine with 235 horsepower or a smoother 3.6-liter 276-horsepower V6, the Atlas also packs a sophisticated touchscreen infotainment system. The top-level SEL Premium also comes with a self-parking function. While the Atlas' engine variants may be a little thirstier than some of the competition's, the car does offer considerably more space, and is still modest in its fuel consumption.
